Google’s Search Relations team recently discussed the potential impact of Web3 on SEO in a new episode of the «Search Off the Record» podcast. The team, consisting of John Mueller, Gary Illyes, and Martin Splitt, explored the challenges and emerging use cases associated with Web3.

Web3 represents a revolutionary evolution of the internet, characterized by its embrace of decentralization and utilization of blockchain technology. Unlike the traditional web, Web3 aims to empower individuals with more control over their online experiences, enhance data privacy, and facilitate peer-to-peer interactions.

During the podcast, the team delved into the implications of Web3 on SEO practices, search engine rankings, and website visibility. While they didn’t delve into specific details and examples, the conversation shed light on some significant considerations.

Mueller highlighted the challenges posed by Web3 domains, explaining that these addresses resemble top-level domains but lack the recognized structure of traditional domains. This poses limitations for Google’s search crawlers when attempting to crawl and index content from these unconventional domains.

In terms of potential use cases, the team acknowledged that substantial development on Web3 systems has yet to be witnessed. However, they emphasized the importance of exploring the possibilities. Some potential applications of Web3 include decentralized applications (dApps), which operate on peer-to-peer networks and often utilize blockchain technology. Examples of dApps include decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, non-fungible token (NFT) marketplaces, and decentralized social media networks. These applications offer increased transparency, security, and user control by operating without intermediaries.

Web3 also introduces the concept of blockchain-based domains, which differ from traditional domain names. These domains utilize decentralized naming systems, allowing users to have ownership and control over their domain names without relying on centralized domain registrars. Ethereum’s Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and Unstoppable Domains are prominent examples of blockchain-based domains.

Another area where Web3 can have an impact is digital identity and privacy. By leveraging decentralized identity solutions and cryptographic principles, Web3 empowers users to have ownership and control over their personal data. This aligns with the growing demand for enhanced online privacy and data protection.

While the full extent of Web3’s impact on SEO practices, search engine rankings, and website visibility is still being explored, the podcast episode offers valuable insights into the challenges and considerations involved. As Web3 technology continues to evolve, SEO professionals and website owners may need to adapt their strategies to ensure optimal discoverability in this new landscape.
