Meta AI has introduced a new feature that incorporates Google Search results into its responses, offering users access to the most current information available on the web.
In a significant move, Meta AI now integrates Google Search results alongside those from Microsoft Bing, making it the pioneering AI assistant to leverage data from both major search engines.
Despite the initial rollout of Meta AI with Microsoft Bing integration last September, Google Search results have yet to be triggered by any queries.
The Significance
The integration of Google Search results into Meta AI’s responses marks a strategic response to evolving user expectations and behaviors. As predicted by Gartner, the proliferation of AI chatbots, virtual agents, and AI answer engines is anticipated to diminish traditional search traffic, as users increasingly seek direct answers without navigating to external websites. By incorporating real-time data from search engines, Meta AI positions itself to meet this demand for immediacy and relevance in information retrieval.
How It Works
Users can now input search queries directly into the search bars of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger apps. When Meta AI includes search results in its responses, these will be presented as clickable links labeled as «Sources.» Tapping on these links redirects users to the web while keeping them within the Meta app ecosystem.
Additionally, Meta AI will now be integrated into the primary Facebook feed, expanding its accessibility and utility across the Meta platform.
Insights from Zuckerberg
In a recent interview with tech publication The Verge, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the integration of Google Search results into Meta AI. He acknowledged the potential benefits for Google in reinforcing its presence and driving traffic, noting Google’s significant financial investments in distribution partnerships, such as with Apple. However, Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta does not receive financial compensation from Google for this integration.
Expanding Accessibility
In tandem with the enhanced search capabilities, Meta has announced the launch of meta.ai, a version of Meta AI optimized for desktop and laptop computers. This expansion marks the first time that Meta AI will be available beyond mobile devices, further extending its reach and usability across different platforms.
